On The Anton Savage Show, Gibbons highlighted a potential crisis as dramatic shifts in Atlantic weather systems could turn Ireland into a nation of climate refugees.

Experts are sounding the alarm over the disruption of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a vital ocean current that brings warm water from the tropics to northwestern Europe. Gibbons explained that the AMOC is being severely affected by the melting of the Greenland ice sheet, which is releasing “hundreds of billions of tons” of fresh water into the North Atlantic. This influx is diluting the saltwater balance crucial for the current’s stability.

“If that current were to fail,” Gibbons stated, “life as we understand it in Ireland today would no longer be possible.” Scientists now estimate there is a 50–50 chance of a shutdown of the AMOC within this century, posing significant risks to Ireland’s agricultural system and living conditions.
