UPDATE: Over 55,000 festival-goers heading to the Boardmasters Festival in Newquay, Cornwall, face significant travel disruptions this weekend due to heavy traffic and crowded trains. Major roadways, including the M5 and A30, are expected to be severely congested as thousands flock to see headline acts such as The Kaiser Chiefs, Central Cee, and The Prodigy.

Authorities are warning attendees to set out early to avoid lengthy delays. The local supporters group, Newquay AFC, cautioned on X, “Set off early fellas, M5 & A30 going to be rammed with holiday traffic.” With the town’s population of 21,500 swelling by an additional 70,000 holidaymakers and festival-goers, the roads are predicted to be in chaos.

Travel by train is also likely to be problematic. CrossCountry anticipates Plymouth station will be particularly busy as festival attendees transfer to connecting services. The operator stated, “Boardmasters Festival is located in Newquay, and you can get to Newquay station easily with CrossCountry.” Shuttles from Newquay station to the festival will run every 15 minutes starting on Wednesday, August 6, with anticipated peak crowds on August 6 and 7, as well as returning home on August 11.

Boardmasters is an annual music and surf festival that has been a staple in the UK since 1981. Originally launched as a surf competition, it has evolved into a major music event. Notable past headliners include Ed Sheeran, Snoop Dogg, and Florence + The Machine.

As excitement builds for this year’s event, the combination of high attendance and potential travel delays has sparked concern among festival-goers.

What’s Next: Festival attendees are urged to plan their travel routes carefully and allow extra time for their journeys. Stay tuned for updates on travel conditions throughout the festival weekend, as authorities will be monitoring the situation closely. Be prepared for potential delays and consider alternative transportation options if necessary.

This year’s Boardmasters Festival promises an unforgettable experience, but the journey may prove challenging. Keep an eye on local traffic reports and rail updates to ensure a smooth trip to Newquay.
