Urgent Works Begin at Kilkenny’s Derelict Newpark Close Site

UPDATE: Immediate works have commenced at the derelict site of Newpark Close on the outskirts of Kilkenny City, addressing long-standing health and safety concerns raised by local residents. Officials confirmed that the initiative, driven by local independent Cllr Eugene McGuinness, aims to transform the neglected area into a safe recreational space.
Residents have expressed their worries about the site, which has been a source of disquiet for years. “Newpark Close was a major health and safety issue,” Cllr McGuinness stated, highlighting the urgent need for action. The Kilkenny City Municipal District previously addressed similar issues over a decade ago, when a grant of €350,000 facilitated the removal of several derelict buildings and the creation of green space.
Cllr McGuinness emphasized the importance of community involvement, saying, “I was glad to play my part in this ongoing project. The area now being cleared will be grassed and left as an open area until the Council and residents decide on the final design.” The council’s proactive approach aims to encourage further investment and improvements throughout the estate.
In light of these developments, residents are hopeful that this initiative marks a turning point for Newpark Close. Cllr McGuinness further assured, “I will continue to engage with residents and the council to push for further improvements which I believe are required throughout the estate.”
This project not only addresses safety concerns but also reflects the determination of the community to reclaim their neighborhood. As the work progresses, the local council and residents will collaborate to determine the best use of the newly cleared space.
Stay tuned for more updates as this significant transformation unfolds in Kilkenny City.
