Vatican Receives 27-Metre Norway Spruce for Christmas 2025
The Vatican welcomed a majestic 27-metre Norway spruce in St Peter’s Square on November 27, 2025. The tree was carefully lifted by crane, marking the beginning of the festive season in the heart of Vatican City. It will stand alongside a Nativity scene inspired by the rich cultural heritage of the Nocera region in Campania, Italy.
The spruce was generously donated by the municipalities of Lagundo and Ultimo, both of which are also providing smaller trees for Vatican offices as part of their contributions ahead of Christmas. This year’s Nativity scene is designed to reflect local landmarks, with figures representing daily life and culture, including elements from the Baptistery of Nocera Superiore and the Helvius Fountain.
Traditionally, the Christmas tree in St Peter’s Square has become a symbol of the holiday spirit, attracting visitors from around the world. The spruce will remain in the square until January 12, 2026, continuing a cherished tradition that began in 1982.
The installation of the tree and Nativity scene underscores the Vatican’s commitment to celebrating local traditions while fostering a sense of community and joy during the festive season. The partnership with the municipalities of Lagundo and Ultimo highlights the importance of collaboration across regions to bring the spirit of Christmas to life in one of the most iconic locations worldwide.
This festive display not only enhances the beauty of St Peter’s Square but also serves as a reminder of the cultural connections that enrich the holiday season. As visitors gather to admire the tree and the Nativity, the Vatican continues to embody the spirit of unity and hope that defines this time of year.
