Victorian Pipe Organ Revived for Special Mass in Limerick Today

URGENT UPDATE: The historic Victorian pipe organ, built in 1880, has been revived and is set to resonate through St Patrick’s Church in Doon, County Limerick, during a special Mass today. This significant event marks a joyful reunion of the cherished instrument with the community after nearly nine years in silence.

As the church bell tolled on this sunny mid-August evening, excitement filled the air. The organ, which had been rescued from the abandoned Convent of Mercy, will bring its sweet, sonorous tones back to life during the Heritage Week Event, organized to celebrate its recent installation.

Chief celebrant Fr Jimmy Donnelly PP, alongside Fr Johnny Sweeney and Deacon Tom Anderson, will lead the Mass, joined by Tina Cummins of the Dún Bleisce Parish Choir. Parishioners and visitors alike are eager to experience the uplifting music that has been a part of their heritage.

In his homily, Fr Donnelly emphasized the significance of the organ, stating it serves as a vibrant reminder of the community’s heritage, “not frozen in time but alive in the present.” He highlighted the shared responsibility to cherish and preserve their cultural treasures for future generations.

Sister Mary Coyle from the Mercy Archive Centre, a proud ‘Doon girl’, expressed her joy at the revival of the organ, thanking Fr Donnelly, the parish choir, and the Historical and Literary Society for their dedication. She noted that the memorial booklet created for this event will be archived as a testament to the community’s efforts.

Presentations were made to key contributors, including choir director Assumpta Uí Riain and organist Mairéad Quigley, recognizing their vital roles in this revival. The celebration continues with refreshments in the Fr McGrath Hall, bringing together community members to share in the nostalgia and joy of this momentous occasion.
