Water Restrictions Extended in Milford, Kerrykeel, Ramelton

UPDATE: Water restrictions in Milford, Kerrykeel, and Ramelton will remain in effect until October 13, 2025, as Uisce Éireann confirms ongoing water supply challenges. The decision follows critical monitoring of local water levels, particularly at Lough Colmcille, which remains under severe pressure.

Despite recent cooler and wetter conditions, Lough Colmcille’s water levels are critically low, requiring significant rainfall to recover. The local community’s efforts to conserve water are acknowledged, but officials emphasize that long-term solutions are necessary.

Residents across Co. Donegal, including Letterkenny, Downings, Carrigart, and the Inishowen Peninsula, are urged to minimize water usage to ensure continued access to essential supplies. Over the past year, water levels have dropped dramatically due to reduced rainfall, with Met Éireann reporting just 893mm of rain, significantly below the long-term average of 1,233mm.

Uisce Éireann’s Water Network Operations Manager for Donegal, Damien O’Sullivan, stated, “Our top priority is to protect our water supply for homes, businesses, and essential services. The decision to extend the Water Conservation Order is based on the continued monitoring that shows Lough Colmcille’s water levels remain critically low.”

The Water Conservation Order prohibits the use of garden hosepipes and other non-essential water uses. This measure is crucial to safeguard the supply for homes and businesses. The community’s past compliance has been vital, but the risk of supply disruption remains high.

Uisce Éireann has implemented extensive measures to address the crisis, including leak detection and pipe repairs.
