Watergate Theatre Unveils Exciting Plan to Transform Kilkenny Venue

BREAKING NEWS: The Watergate Theatre in Kilkenny has just announced a transformative strategic plan for 2025-2029, aiming to enhance its facilities and community engagement. This ambitious initiative was unveiled during Culture Night and is set to revolutionize the theatre experience for patrons, performers, and staff.
The plan focuses on three key pillars: space, growth, and inclusion. Among the most significant changes, the theatre will convert the old Squash Court located in the Abbey Quarter into a brand new studio and development space. This upgrade is essential as the theatre acknowledges that parts of its existing structure no longer meet modern demands.
Watergate Theatre Chairman, Nickey Brennan, expressed optimism for the future, stating, “We’re aware that the theatre itself is not quite meeting the needs of patrons in many different regards and it’s time that changed.” He emphasized the need for both basic amenities and the finer experiences that a contemporary arts venue can offer.
As part of the strategic plan, the theatre is committed to enhancing diverse representation within its Board and community engagement. This initiative is designed to foster a welcoming and inclusive environment, ensuring that all community voices are heard. The theatre also aims to improve workspaces for artists and team members, allowing for dedicated areas to work, create, and collaborate.
The development of this strategic plan was initiated in mid-2023 and involved extensive consultations with various stakeholders, including the Watergate Board, Kilkenny County Council, and local community members. The plan was crafted by Executive Director Joanna Cunningham and designed by Emma O’Neill, with facilitation from Susan Coughlan of Art of Change.
In additional positive news for the theatre, Kilkenny County Council recently approved energy upgrade works, including the installation of new insulated cladding for the auditorium and fly tower. This is expected to enhance the venue’s overall sustainability.
The Watergate Theatre has been a beloved cultural hub in Kilkenny since its opening by President Mary Robinson in 1993. It has hosted countless performances across various genres, growing increasingly popular within the community. The latest strategic plan aims to ensure that the theatre continues to serve the diverse needs of its audience while remaining relevant in an evolving cultural landscape.
As the Watergate Theatre embarks on this exciting journey, the community can look forward to smaller shows being showcased in the new Abbey Quarter development upon completion. This initiative signals a bright future for the arts in Kilkenny.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as the Watergate Theatre works towards a more inclusive and accessible arts experience for all.
