The west side of Galway is set to introduce a Christmas Park and Ride service for the first time, enhancing transportation options for residents and visitors. The initiative, which will launch on December 19, 2023, allows commuters to park for free at the University of Galway’s Corrib Village and take a bus into the city centre. This service aims to alleviate congestion and provide a convenient travel solution during the festive season.

Fine Gael City Councillor Eddie Hoare highlighted the benefits of this service, particularly for those living along the N59 and surrounding areas. He expressed optimism that this new service will improve access to the city during a busy time of year.

In addition to the west side service, a scaled-back Park and Ride will operate on the east side at ATU Galway on the Dublin Road. This comes after the traditional bus service between Galway Racecourse and the city centre was discontinued due to unsustainable financial losses. Councillor Shane Forde noted that the parking at ATU Galway is strategically located to serve multiple bus routes, making it a practical option for commuters.

Both the west and east side Park and Ride services will be available from December 19 until Christmas Eve, allowing residents to travel conveniently during the holiday period. This initiative reflects the city’s commitment to improving transport infrastructure and enhancing the overall holiday experience for residents and visitors alike.
