Woman Fined €300 After Stealing Diesel in Limerick Under Duress
BREAKING: A woman has been convicted and fined €300 after admitting to stealing diesel from a service station in Limerick. Sharon Hickey, from Mullingar, County Westmeath, pleaded guilty to the theft of €36 worth of diesel from Circle K on Ballysimon Road on June 28, 2021.
In Limerick District Court, it was revealed that Hickey was under significant duress at the time of the incident. Her solicitor, Tom Kiely, stated that she was in a “toxic relationship” that pressured her into committing the crime. According to Kiely, Hickey was coerced into filling her car with fuel and leaving without paying.
Judge Patricia Harney was informed of the emotional and physical toll this relationship had on Hickey. Kiely urged for leniency, emphasizing the lasting scars from her past experiences.
Hickey has been free from addiction for several years, although she has a history of legal troubles, including two previous convictions under the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act, 2001. Sergeant Denis Waters noted that multiple bench warrants had been issued for Hickey when she failed to attend court sessions in the past.
After considering the circumstances, Judge Harney recorded a conviction and imposed the €300 fine, giving Hickey three months to settle the payment.
This case underscores the complexities surrounding individuals in challenging relational dynamics, highlighting the pressures that can lead to criminal behavior. As developments unfold, authorities emphasize the importance of support systems for those in similar situations.
