Gazan Refugee Reunited with Husband in Ireland, Faces Health Crisis

Feras Shaheen experienced a mix of relief and anxiety as he awaited the arrival of his wife, Areej Al Zohoor, at Dublin Airport. The couple, married for just six months, had been separated by the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Areej, aged 28, was evacuated by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) just days prior to her arrival in Ireland. As she stepped through the arrivals door, visibly frail and shaken, Mr. Shaheen could finally envision a future together.
Unfortunately, that hope was quickly overshadowed by concern for Areej’s health. The day following her arrival, she was hospitalized due to severe malnutrition. Feras described the moment he saw her after the evacuation, stating, “Her body just shut down.” This stark reality highlights the dire conditions faced by many in Gaza, where ongoing conflict has led to widespread food shortages and medical crises.
Areej’s journey to Ireland was fraught with challenges. After enduring weeks of uncertainty and fear in Gaza, she was among those fortunate enough to be flown to safety. The DFA facilitated the evacuation of several individuals from the war-torn region, but the effects of starvation and trauma were evident in Areej’s condition upon arrival.
In the hospital, doctors confirmed that Areej had lost a significant amount of weight during her time in Gaza, leaving her in a vulnerable state. The couple now faces the daunting task of rebuilding their lives together while navigating the complexities of Areej’s recovery.
The couple’s story underscores the broader humanitarian crisis affecting countless families in the region. As they settle into their new life in Ireland, Feras and Areej hope to raise awareness about the ongoing struggles faced by those still in Gaza. “Many people are going through similar situations. We need to tell their stories,” Feras emphasized.
Areej’s case is just one among many that illustrate the urgent need for international support and assistance. As governments and organizations strive to provide aid, the personal narratives of individuals like Areej and Feras remind us of the human impact behind the statistics.
As they navigate this new chapter, the couple is determined to advocate for those still trapped in conflict. Their reunion, marked by both joy and sorrow, serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
