Gazan Woman Hospitalized After Reunion with Husband in Ireland

Feras Shaheen experienced a mix of joy and anxiety as he awaited the arrival of his wife, Areej Al Zohoor, at Dublin Airport. After being evacuated from war-torn Gaza by the Department of Foreign Affairs, she arrived in Ireland on October 16, 2023. Although their reunion brought relief, it was soon overshadowed by a distressing turn of events.
As Areej Al Zohoor, aged 28, stepped through the arrivals gate, she appeared frail and frightened. The couple had only been married for six months, and the challenges they faced during the conflict in Gaza had taken a toll on her health. Feras described the moment she emerged from the crowd, stating, “Her body just shut down.”
The next day, after arriving in Ireland, Areej was hospitalized due to severe malnutrition. Her condition reflects the dire consequences of living through a prolonged conflict where access to food and medical care is severely restricted. Feras, age 23, expressed his concern over her well-being, noting that the emotional strain of separation was compounded by the physical impact of starvation.
Reunion Amidst Trauma
The couple’s reunion was bittersweet, highlighting the resilience of love amid turmoil. Feras had remained in contact with Areej during her time in Gaza, providing emotional support as she navigated the chaos surrounding them. After her evacuation, he felt a surge of hope, believing their future together was finally within reach.
Yet, the realities of her condition quickly set in. Areej’s hospitalization prompted immediate medical attention, as doctors worked to stabilize her health. Reports indicated that she was suffering from severe dehydration and vitamin deficiencies, common consequences of malnutrition.
Feras shared the emotional weight of their experiences, emphasizing the importance of support for others in similar situations. “We need to raise awareness about the critical state of people back home,” he remarked, drawing attention to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The Broader Context of the Gaza Conflict
The situation faced by Areej and Feras is emblematic of the broader humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where ongoing conflict has resulted in significant loss of life and displacement. The United Nations has repeatedly called for increased humanitarian aid to the region, as many families struggle to access basic necessities such as food, water, and medical care.
As the couple begins to rebuild their lives in Ireland, they hope to raise awareness about the plight of those still trapped in conflict zones. Their story serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of war and the urgent need for international support and intervention.
Feras remains hopeful for the future, despite the challenges they face. “We will get through this together,” he said, emphasizing his commitment to supporting Areej as she recovers. Their resilience and determination shine through, as they navigate their new life together in a country far from home.
