German Air Force Scrambles To Track Russian Military Aircraft Over Baltic

On March 10, 2025, the German Air Force successfully intercepted a Russian military aircraft that had entered neutral airspace over the Baltic Sea. Two Eurofighter jets were deployed to track the Russian IL-20M reconnaissance aircraft, which was operating without a flight plan or radio contact.
In a statement, the German Air Force confirmed its response, stating, “Once again, our quick reaction alert force, consisting of two Eurofighters, was tasked by NATO with investigating an unidentified aircraft.” The aircraft was subsequently identified as the Russian reconnaissance plane. After confirming its identity, Germany handed over escort duties to its NATO ally, Sweden, and returned to its base in Rostock-Laage.
This incident underscores rising tensions in the region. Just days earlier, on March 8, three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets violated Estonian airspace for approximately 12 minutes. According to officials in Tallinn, the jets were forced to withdraw after entering without permission.
NATO’s North Atlantic Council is scheduled to convene on March 12, 2025, to address these incidents, including the recent Russian airspace violations. The meeting aims to formulate a coordinated response to these developments and reaffirm the alliance’s commitment to collective security.
As military activities increase in the Baltic region, the actions of both NATO and Russian forces remain closely monitored. The recent airspace breaches highlight the delicate balance of power and the potential for escalation in an area already marked by historical tensions.
