Hurricane Melissa Strikes Cuba After Devastating Jamaica
Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Cuba on March 5, 2025, following its record-setting impact on Jamaica. This storm, described as “extremely dangerous” by the US National Hurricane Center, left a trail of destruction, with hundreds of thousands of residents in Jamaica without power and critical evacuations at hospitals.
As Melissa crossed the eastern coast of Cuba, authorities braced for significant rainfall and hazardous conditions. The storm is expected to bring as much as 63 cm of rain and storm surges reaching 3.7 meters above normal levels. Residents are urged to take precautions as the storm continues to pose severe risks.
The situation in Jamaica remains dire. According to Desmond McKenzie, the Minister of Local Government, the damage has been widespread, hindering full assessments of the impact. Emergency response efforts are ongoing, but the chaotic conditions have complicated recovery operations. McKenzie noted that the extent of the devastation is still being evaluated, emphasizing the challenges faced by first responders.
Impact on Infrastructure and Emergency Response
In Jamaica, the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa has created significant challenges for infrastructure and emergency services. The storm’s intensity rendered many areas inaccessible, complicating relief efforts. Hospitals, already under pressure from the storm, were forced to evacuate patients to ensure their safety.
Power outages affecting hundreds of thousands have raised concerns about access to essential services, including healthcare and clean water. Local authorities are working around the clock to restore electricity and assess damages to roads and buildings.
Reports from various regions indicate that homes have been severely damaged or destroyed, leaving families in precarious situations. The Jamaican government has mobilized resources to assist those affected, but the scale of the destruction presents a daunting task.
Cuba Faces Similar Threats
As Hurricane Melissa made its way to Cuba, preparations were intensified along the eastern coast. Local governments issued alerts and warnings, urging residents to secure their homes and prepare for possible evacuations.
The Cuban government has a history of effective storm response strategies, and authorities are leveraging these protocols to mitigate potential damage. However, the anticipated rainfall and storm surges pose significant risks to both urban and rural areas.
Residents in Cuba are reminded to stay informed through official channels as the storm progresses. Emergency services are prepared to respond quickly to any incidents, ensuring public safety is prioritized.
The ongoing situation remains fluid, with updates expected as assessments of damage and recovery efforts continue in both Jamaica and Cuba. As communities grapple with the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, international support may be necessary to aid in recovery and rebuilding efforts.
