Iconic Morzine Ski Hotel Transforms into Hotel Coutettaz

One of the standout boutique hotels in the Portes du Soleil ski area has undergone a significant rebranding, revealing a new name and ambitious renovation plans. The hotel, now called Hotel Coutettaz, is located in Morzine, the oldest building in the ski resort, and aims to increase its guest capacity by 25%. This transformation marks a new chapter for both staff and visitors, enhancing the luxury experience associated with this historic landmark.

Honoring History While Embracing Modern Luxury

The rebranding to Hotel Coutettaz pays homage to the property’s rich 250-year history, originally known as Mas de la Coutettaz. The redesign focuses on elevating the guest experience, blending heritage with contemporary style and high-quality service. This approach is tailored to appeal to a new generation of Alpine travelers.

The rebranding initiative encompasses every aspect of the hotel, including signage, staff uniforms, and digital platforms. This comprehensive overhaul precedes a significant renovation project that will add three additional rooms, increasing the total from 11 to 14 rooms, thus accommodating up to 32 guests. This expansion comes in response to a growing demand for luxury accommodations from international travelers seeking ski and summer holiday experiences, as well as couples looking for destination weddings in the French Alps.

Since acquiring the hotel in 1993, owner Dorrien Ricardo has seen a shift in clientele. He stated, “The old brand and name ‘The Farmhouse’ reflected the business’ client base at the time in the early ’90s, which was predominantly British skiers. Since then, we have grown into a unique luxury property for international guests, including skiers, mountain enthusiasts, and wedding couples from across the globe.”

A Unique Offering in a Historic Setting

Located in Morzine’s oldest building, Hotel Coutettaz is deeply intertwined with the town’s history. The structure was built in 1771 by Antoine Plagnat, a notable figure in the slate mining industry, using local materials. With only three owners since its construction, the hotel retains its original features, such as the slate roof and dark wooden beams, which contribute to its unique charm.

Hotel manager James emphasizes the importance of authenticity in the guest experience. He noted, “Our guest experience is rooted in authenticity and designed for the discerning Alpine traveler who values deep experiences that leave lasting memories long after checking out. The mountains are becoming a place where people come to recharge their batteries, connect with nature, and disconnect from everyday life.”

The hotel also prioritizes food, understanding that culinary experiences are vital for many travelers. Guests can look forward to modern European dishes crafted with local ingredients, from Alpine game to seasonal foraged produce, all prepared with care and creativity.

Situated near the vast Portes du Soleil ski area, which features over 600 km of pistes across France and Switzerland, Hotel Coutettaz is ideally positioned for guests eager to explore the mountains. Renovation work is scheduled to occur in stages during the hotel’s inter-season periods, spanning over the next two years.

The hotel will continue operating during its regular seasons, welcoming guests from mid-December to mid-April in winter and mid-June to mid-September in summer. Skiers can expect to return to Hotel Coutettaz for the upcoming season starting on December 12, 2025.
