Irish Travel Trade Connects at ITAA Conference in Portugal

The ITAA Conference 2025 commenced this week in the picturesque Center of Portugal, drawing delegates from across Ireland. After arriving via TAP Airlines from Dublin to Lisbon, attendees were welcomed at the stunning Hotel Montebelo Mosteiro de Alcobaça with a traditional Portuguese wine reception, setting the tone for a vibrant gathering.
The conference featured a diverse range of activities, including golf clinics, walking tours, and an excursion to the renowned pilgrimage site of Fatima. That evening, the delegates enjoyed a lively “Wine Party” at the outdoor venue Vineyards Quinta da Cerca do Colégio, where they sampled exceptional local wines, including sparkling, red, white, and rosé varieties, paired with regional delicacies.
Tom Randles, President of the ITAA, opened the conference, followed by moderator Eoghan Corry, who introduced João Quaresma. Quaresma delivered an engaging presentation highlighting the attractions of the Center of Portugal, accompanied by musician Hugh Bruton from Brittany Ferries and “Poet” Paul Manning of Hertz.
A significant focus of the conference was the role of artificial intelligence in the travel industry, led by industry expert Danny Waine of Travelnomads. Waine discussed practical systems for integrating AI into business operations. The topic of NDC (New Distribution Capability) sparked lively debates among the panel, which included Jenny Rafter, Maura Fahy, Christian Moller, and Marta Alves.
The session also featured a spotlight on the Travel Department, presented by Claire Doherty, who shared impressive statistics about their customer base, revealing that 85% of their guests are Irish, with 70% being repeat clients. The Travel Department operates in over 200 destinations worldwide, underscoring its significance in the travel trade.
During his presentation, Carlos Pinto de Oliveira, Director of Visit Portugal in Ireland, provided insights into Portugal’s rich traditions, beautiful scenery, and diverse travel opportunities, inspiring attendees to consider future visits. Updates on the ITAA’s progress and priorities were shared by Jean Maxwell and Clare Dunne, while Anne Dolan discussed the latest developments in travel law.
The conference also included a compelling presentation by Daniela Cintra, who emphasized the importance of effective marketing strategies in converting potential clients into bookings. Martin Skelly encouraged attendees to explore walking opportunities, highlighting his organization UWalk.ie and the allure of the Camino pilgrimage.
In a more light-hearted segment, Jeanette Taylor made insurance engaging during her sponsor update, reminding delegates of the necessity of securing insurance at the time of booking. The event concluded on a thought-provoking note with a discussion led by John Galligan, Paul Sexton, and Dave O’Brien on whether to “consolidate or cultivate” in the current travel landscape.
The conference’s gala dinner is set to take place at the hotel, promising an elegant evening with delegates preparing for a night of networking and celebration. On the final day, attendees will embark on historical tours across the Center of Portugal, with a farewell beach party at São Martinho do Porto and lunch at the Alcobaça Apple Orchard. The conference will officially conclude on Sunday morning, with delegates departing on TAP Airlines.
