Israel Launches Military Operation to Seize Gaza City

Israel’s military has initiated a significant operation aimed at taking control of Gaza City. On Wednesday, an Israeli military spokesman, Brigadier General Effie Defrin, confirmed that troops have begun circling the outskirts of the city. This action follows a confrontation with Hamas militants near Khan Younis, located in the southern part of the Gaza Strip. General Defrin characterized Hamas as a “battered and bruised” guerrilla force, stating that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) are committed to intensifying their offensive against what he described as a stronghold of terrorism.
In his remarks, General Defrin outlined the progress of the operation. “We have begun the preliminary operations and the first stages of the attack on Gaza City, and already now IDF forces are holding the outskirts of Gaza City,” he said. The military operation has raised concerns about the potential humanitarian impact, especially as the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Guterres emphasized the urgent need to prevent further loss of life and destruction, stating, “It is vital to reach immediately a ceasefire in Gaza.”
On the same day, Israel mobilized tens of thousands of reservists in preparation for the anticipated assault on Gaza City. This call-up indicates Israel’s determination to press ahead with its plans, despite international criticism regarding the potential displacement of Palestinian civilians. While the reservists have been summoned, military officials noted that they are not expected to report for duty until September 2025, allowing time for mediators to negotiate a truce between the Israeli government and Hamas.
The situation escalated on Wednesday when Israeli troops engaged more than 15 Hamas militants who emerged from tunnel systems and launched attacks using gunfire and anti-tank missiles near Khan Younis. During this encounter, one Israeli soldier sustained severe injuries, while two others were lightly wounded. Hamas’s military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, confirmed their involvement in the attack, stating that they executed a raid on Israeli forces southeast of Khan Younis, resulting in casualties among the soldiers.
As the military operation unfolds, the potential for increased violence and humanitarian crises in the region remains a pressing concern. International observers continue to monitor the situation closely, with hopes that diplomatic efforts can mitigate the impact on civilians caught in the crossfire.
