Multiple Injured in Train Stabbing Incident in Eastern England
A stabbing incident on a train in eastern England on March 15, 2025, has left 11 people injured, including a train crew member who remains in critical but stable condition. The 32-year-old suspect, arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, was not known to counter-terrorism police or security services, according to British Transport Minister Heidi Alexander. Authorities have stated that the attack is not being treated as terrorism.
The attack occurred shortly after the train departed from Peterborough station. Emergency services responded swiftly, with police arriving within eight minutes of the first call. Passengers activated emergency alarms, prompting the train to stop in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. Two men were arrested at the scene.
Witness accounts reveal a chaotic and terrifying atmosphere. One passenger, Dayna Arnold, recounted her experience, stating, “I fell down and I just said, ‘Please don’t kill me.’” As she begged for her life, she observed a shift in the suspect’s demeanor, but he continued his violent actions.
CCTV footage reviewed by detectives highlighted the courageous actions of a train crew member who intervened to stop the attacker. Minister Alexander praised his bravery, saying, “He literally put himself in harm’s way. There will be people who are alive today because of his actions.” Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Cundy of the British Transport Police echoed this sentiment, calling the crew member’s actions “nothing short of heroic.”
Some passengers sought refuge in train toilets and the buffet car, while others provided assistance to the injured. Witness Olly Foster described how an older man intervened to block the attacker from reaching a younger girl, sustaining injuries in the process. Other passengers used their clothing to try to stem the bleeding of those injured.
The suspect was observed brandishing a knife and reportedly shouted at police to kill him. Taxi driver Viorel Turturica, who was nearby, recalled hearing the man demand, “kill me, kill me, kill me.” Police eventually subdued the suspect using a Taser before detaining him.
As investigations continue, authorities are working to gather more information on the suspect’s background. Minister Alexander noted that while the individual was not known to counter-terrorism authorities, she could not confirm whether he had any previous interactions with mental health services.
The incident has raised concerns about safety on public transport, particularly in light of recent events involving mass stabbings. The response from emergency services has drawn praise, highlighting the importance of rapid action in crisis situations.
As the community begins to process the aftermath of this violent episode, many passengers have expressed their relief at surviving the incident and their gratitude for the quick response from the train crew and police.
