Syria Commits to Protect Druze Citizens After Israeli Strikes

In a strong response to recent Israeli air strikes, Syria’s interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, declared the protection of Druze citizens a “priority.” This statement comes in the wake of significant military actions targeting Damascus, specifically aimed at Syrian government forces accused of threatening the Druze community in southern Syria.
In his first televised address following the air strikes on March 27, 2025, al-Sharaa addressed the Druze population, emphasizing, “We reject any attempt to drag you into hands of an external party.” He reassured the community of Syria’s commitment to their safety, stating, “We are not among those who fear the war. We have spent our lives facing challenges and defending our people.” His remarks reflect a broader concern for national stability amid ongoing conflict.
Impact of Israeli Air Strikes
The recent Israeli strikes reportedly resulted in significant damage, including attacks on the Syrian defense ministry and locations near the presidential palace. Israel’s military actions marked a notable escalation in its efforts to prevent what it describes as jihadist elements from operating in southern Syria. According to an Israeli military official, the strikes were aimed at deterring Syrian forces from attacking the Druze community, which is spread across Syria, Lebanon, and Israel.
As tensions rise, the United Nations Security Council is set to convene to discuss the situation in Syria. The Syrian Network for Human Rights reported that at least 169 people have been killed during the recent violence, while security sources cited a higher toll of approximately 300 casualties. These figures have not yet been independently verified by outside observers.
In a broader context, al-Sharaa’s administration has been attempting to strengthen ties with the United States, despite facing ongoing military pressure from Israel. The Israeli government has expressed its intention to prevent Syrian forces from moving into southern Syria, reflecting concerns about the implications for the Druze community.
International Reactions and Developments
Following calls from within Israel to assist the Druze in Syria, a number of Israeli Druze reportedly crossed the border into Syria to connect with their counterparts amidst the escalating violence. Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu assured that the military is actively working to protect the Druze community and advised Israeli Druze citizens against crossing the border.
On social media, Marco Rubio, the United States Secretary of State, remarked, “We have engaged all the parties involved in the clashes in Syria. We have agreed on specific steps that will bring this troubling and horrifying situation to an end tonight.” His statement reflects the U.S. government’s concern and proactive stance in addressing the ongoing conflict.
As the situation develops, the humanitarian implications remain significant for the Druze community and the broader Syrian population. The international community continues to monitor the evolving dynamics in the region, with hopes for a resolution that ensures the safety and rights of all citizens affected by the violence.
