A three-year-old boy in Hangzhou, China, survived an astonishing fall from the 18th floor of an apartment building on July 15, 2023. The incident occurred around 15:00 local time while the child was in the care of his grandparents. Believing him to be asleep, they left to buy groceries, securing the door behind them to prevent him from leaving the apartment.

Upon waking, the toddler ventured to the bathroom, where he climbed onto the toilet and accessed an unlocked window that lacked safety bars. He fell from the height directly into the branches of a tree before landing in a bush below, rather than on the concrete ground.

The fall was discovered by a resident who witnessed the aftermath and filmed the scene. This footage was shared in a local property management group, ultimately reaching the boy’s father, identified only as Zhu. “At first, I could not believe he had fallen from the 18th floor until surveillance footage confirmed it,” Zhu remarked, according to the South China Morning Post.

Miraculous Recovery

Surveillance footage revealed that the child brushed past an open window on the 17th floor before his fall. Emergency services were alerted by property management staff, who promptly called the police and an ambulance. The boy was transported to the Children’s Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, where medical professionals described his survival as “a miracle.”

Although he sustained a fractured left arm, spinal strain, and damage to internal organs, remarkably, his head remained uninjured. He was fully conscious upon arrival and even requested a toy, asking the medical team to “ask daddy to buy me a Bumblebee” shortly after being admitted.

According to reports from Beijing News, the child is gradually recovering from his injuries.

A Gesture of Gratitude

In a traditional display of gratitude, the family tied a large red flower around the tree that softened his fall. This gesture symbolizes honor and thanksgiving within Chinese culture, reflecting the family’s appreciation for the tree that played a crucial role in their son’s survival.

As the community processes this incredible incident, many are left in awe of the boy’s resilience and the swift response of the emergency services. The event serves as a reminder of the importance of safety measures in homes, particularly for young children.
