At least 15 people have died and approximately 18 others sustained injuries when the popular Gloria funicular railway in Lisbon derailed and crashed on March 6, 2025. The incident occurred shortly after 18:00 local time, when the funicular car collided with a building. An emergency medical service spokesman confirmed the fatalities, but authorities have yet to disclose the identities or nationalities of the victims, although some foreign nationals are believed to be among those who perished.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Carlos Moedas, the mayor of Lisbon, expressed deep sorrow, stating, “It’s a tragic day for our city. Lisbon is in mourning; it is a tragic, tragic incident.” Eyewitness accounts and footage from the scene depict severe damage to the funicular, which is a cherished tourist attraction in the city, as emergency workers laboured to rescue individuals trapped in the wreckage.

Reports indicate that the cable supporting the funicular car snapped, causing the derailment. Among the injured, five individuals are reported to be in serious condition. The funicular, which has been operational since 1885, serves as a vital link between the downtown area near Restauradores Square and the Bairro Alto district, renowned for its vibrant nightlife. Each year, around 3 million passengers ride this unique transport, which was designated a national monument more than two decades ago.

The funicular operates with two cars attached to opposite ends of a haulage cable, powered by electric motors. While the car at the bottom of the line remained undamaged, witnesses indicated that passengers had to escape through the windows during the chaotic moments following the crash.

In a statement, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the President of Portugal, expressed his condolences and emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to determine the cause of this tragic accident. He voiced hope that authorities would swiftly uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident.

As investigations continue, the city of Lisbon and the nation mourn the loss of lives in this devastating event. The Gloria funicular, with its rich history and significance to both locals and visitors, will undoubtedly be remembered for its tragic day.
