Tragic Lisbon Funicular Crash Claims 15 Lives, Injures Many
At least 15 people died and approximately 18 others were injured on March 13, 2024, when the Gloria funicular railway in Lisbon derailed and crashed. The incident, which occurred shortly after 18:00 local time, has been described as a tragic event for the city. An emergency medical service spokesman confirmed the fatalities, noting that some of the victims were foreign nationals.
Carlos Moedas, the mayor of Lisbon, expressed deep sorrow over the event, stating, “It’s a tragic day for our city. Lisbon is in mourning; it is a tragic, tragic incident.” The funicular, a popular attraction for tourists, reportedly derailed due to a snapped cable and collided with a nearby building. Local media indicated that five of the injured sustained serious injuries, raising concerns about their conditions.
Eyewitness footage captured the aftermath, depicting the destroyed funicular and emergency responders working to extract individuals from the wreckage. The funicular is known for its steep route connecting the downtown area near Restauradores Square to the Bairro Alto, a district celebrated for its nightlife.
President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed his condolences and emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash. The Gloria funicular, which has been in operation since 1885, can accommodate up to 43 passengers. Each year, it attracts around 3 million users and was designated a national monument over two decades ago.
The municipal public transport company, Carris, operates the funicular, which utilizes an innovative cable system to transport passengers up and down the hillside. Reports suggest that the second car, located at the bottom of the line, remained undamaged, though passengers were forced to exit through the windows during the calamity.
As investigations continue, the city of Lisbon faces a somber period of reflection and mourning for those lost in this tragic incident. Further updates will follow as more information becomes available.
