The trial of Peter Augustine, accused of murdering John Mackey, an 87-year-old Irish pensioner, commenced today at London’s Old Bailey. Mackey tragically died after sustaining injuries during an attack on May 6, 2023, while running errands near his home in north London.

According to police reports, Mackey had visited a supermarket and a kebab shop in the Manor House area before he was allegedly assaulted on Goodchild Road that afternoon. He suffered significant head injuries and succumbed to his injuries two days later in the hospital. Augustine, 58, from Green Lanes, Hornsey, has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and robbery. The trial is expected to last approximately two weeks.

Details of the Incident and Victim’s Background

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Rogers, who is leading the investigation, provided insights into Mackey’s life following the tragic incident. Describing him as a “proud Irishman” and an “innocent member of the public,” Rogers emphasized the community’s loss.

“John was walking back home after running errands when he became the victim of this tragic incident,” Rogers said. He further shared that Mackey was born in Callan, County Kilkenny, Ireland, and relocated to London in the 1950s. He was one of 11 children and leaves behind four siblings, as well as a remarkable 22 nieces and nephews.

Mackey was celebrated by his family as “funny and charming,” with a passion for football as a lifelong fan of Arsenal. His family plans to honor him with a final trip back to Ireland for his burial.

Rogers reassured the local community that a suspect has been charged and that there is no ongoing search for additional suspects in connection with Mackey’s death. The beginning of the trial marks a significant moment for both the victim’s family and the local community, as they seek justice for the beloved pensioner.
