Trump Introduces ‘FIFA Pass’ for Priority Visas to World Cup Fans
Football fans planning to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States will benefit from a new initiative that prioritizes their visa applications. President Donald Trump announced the launch of the “FIFA Pass” during a press event in the Oval Office on October 26, 2023, alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino. This system aims to streamline visa processing for ticket holders, enabling them to secure expedited interviews at U.S. embassies globally.
Trump emphasized the administration’s commitment to making the World Cup a success. “I’ve directed my administration to do everything within the power to make the 2026 World Cup an unprecedented success,” he stated. The announcement comes as FIFA anticipates a significant influx of visitors, with estimates of “between five and ten million” people expected to travel to the U.S. for the event.
Streamlined Visa Process for Soccer Fans
The FIFA Pass introduces a prioritized appointment scheduling system. Ticket holders will be able to register for expedited visa interviews, which the administration hopes will facilitate smoother entry for international fans. Infantino highlighted the importance of this initiative in ensuring that legitimate football fans can attend the World Cup. “With this FIFA pass, we can make sure that those who buy a ticket are legitimate football fans,” he noted.
The U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, also addressed the media, revealing that over 400 additional consular officers have been deployed to assist with visa requests related to the World Cup. This expansion effectively doubles the number of officers available in certain countries, enhancing the capacity to process applications.
“The good news now is about 80% of the world can get an appointment within 60 days,” Rubio stated. Previously, applicants faced wait times of up to six months or longer. He urged ticket holders to apply for their visas as soon as possible, clarifying that a ticket does not guarantee admission to the U.S. but does ensure a prioritized appointment.
Ensuring Security and Efficiency
Rubio reassured the public that World Cup ticket holders utilizing the FIFA Pass will undergo the same vetting procedures as all other visa applicants. “The only difference here is we’re moving them up in the queue,” he explained. He emphasized the importance of early application, advising fans to not wait until the last minute.
Infantino expressed confidence in the event’s global viewership, predicting that six billion people would tune in to watch the World Cup. He also noted that approximately one billion people are expected to watch the World Cup draw scheduled for December 5, 2023, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
As preparations for the 2026 World Cup continue, the FIFA Pass represents a significant effort by the U.S. government to accommodate the anticipated surge of international visitors. The initiative reflects a broader strategy to enhance the experience for soccer fans while ensuring security and efficiency in the visa process.
