Ukrainian Drones Strike Russian Infrastructure After Fatal Attacks

Ukrainian drone attacks targeted Russian energy and defence infrastructure overnight, resulting in three fatalities, as reported by Russian officials. This escalation comes in response to a deadly assault earlier in the week that claimed the lives of 31 people, including five children, in Kyiv and Kharkiv.

The Russian Ministry of Defence stated that air defences intercepted or destroyed a total of **112 drones** across eight regions, including the Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula. In the Rostov region, which borders Ukraine, one person was killed due to a drone strike, according to acting governor **Yuri Slyusar**. Meanwhile, in the Penza region, regional governor **Oleg Melnichenko** confirmed that a woman died and two others were injured in a drone attack on a business site. Furthermore, in the Samara region, debris from a downed drone resulted in a fire that led to the death of an elderly resident, as reported by regional governor **Vyacheslav Fedorishchev**.

Ukrainian authorities claimed responsibility for the strikes, asserting that they specifically targeted critical sites within Russia’s energy and defence sectors late on **July 7, 2023**. Among the locations hit were the **Ryazan** and **Novokuibyshevsk** oil refineries, a fuel storage facility in **Voronezh**, and a defence-related electronics manufacturer in Penza. In a statement from the Ukrainian Air Force, it was noted that Russia launched **53 drones** and decoys towards Ukraine, with Ukrainian air defences successfully neutralising **45** of these threats.

The aftermath of these drone strikes saw injuries reported as well. In the Kharkiv region, **eleven** individuals sustained injuries from an overnight drone attack, according to governor **Oleh Syniehubov**.

Escalating Tensions and International Response

This series of retaliatory strikes unfolded after a day of mourning in Kyiv, which was declared following the devastating Russian drone and missile attack. The situation continues to draw international attention, particularly after **U.S. President Donald Trump** issued a new deadline for peace negotiations, stating that progress must be made by **August 8, 2023**. The National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) reported that they apprehended a sitting lawmaker, two local officials, and several national guard personnel on charges of bribery, although they have not disclosed the identities of those involved.
