Young Adults Seek Change in Political and Economic Systems

Young adults globally are challenging political and economic systems that they feel are failing them. From Madagascar and Morocco to Peru, youth protests have become a common sight, demanding accountability and change. In the United States, while the demonstrations may not be as pronounced, the sentiment among American Gen Zers—those aged between 13 and 28—is similarly one of questioning and seeking alternatives to established norms.

A significant finding from the Institute for Citizens and Scholars indicates that 61% of young Americans do not align with either the Republican or Democratic parties. Rather than turning away from political discourse, this generation shows a strong interest in engaging with opposing viewpoints. Over 37% of Gen Z respondents find such conversations “interesting and informative,” a stark contrast to the national average of just 22%.

Emerging Trends in Activism and Employment

The rise of communication apps and social media platforms has played a crucial role in shaping the political and social awareness of young people. A study conducted in the United Kingdom in 2020 revealed that one-third of 8- to 17-year-olds felt motivated to take action on specific causes due to their online experiences. This proactive approach extends into their professional lives as well. According to a report by Deloitte, a striking 86% of younger workers prioritize “purpose” in their careers. Furthermore, more than 40% have turned down job opportunities due to concerns about social and environmental issues or work-life balance.

The generational divide is evident in the workplace, where the expectations of hiring managers often clash with those of younger job seekers. A recent headline in the Wall Street Journal posed the question, “Is Gen Z Unemployable?” suggesting that while employers value achievement and learning, today’s youth prioritize fulfillment and individual expression. Yet, the reality for many is more complicated. As reported by Newsweek, one in five young workers juggle multiple jobs to make ends meet, and only 22% consider themselves financially stable.

Facing Economic Realities

The economic landscape for recent graduates is challenging. Many young adults entered the job market during the pandemic, navigating a fragile economy while also facing the increasing threat of artificial intelligence impacting entry-level positions. Personal finance expert George Kamel emphasized that the issue lies not in the effort of Gen Z workers, but in the systemic challenges they face.

In a reflective piece for The Guardian, Gen Z author Alice Lassman articulated the aspirations of her generation. She urged society not to view resources as limited and called for a collective effort to reframe the conversation around political and economic solutions. Lassman sees this moment as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to ask important questions and seek innovative answers without being bound by political allegiance.
