James O’Connor Takes Charge of Waterford U-20 Hurling Team

James O’Connor has been appointed to lead the Waterford U-20 hurling team for the next two seasons, with an option for a third year. This decision follows his successful tenure with the Waterford minors, where he guided the team to All-Ireland victory in 2023. This marked the first championship win for the minors since 2013.
The continuity in Waterford’s underage hurling ranks reflects a strategic approach to player development. O’Connor, a native of Lismore, has built a strong reputation within the sport, particularly after his recent accomplishments. His leadership is expected to benefit both the U-20s and the minors, as he will continue to oversee the latter group in the coming years.
In a related move, Darragh O’Sullivan has taken the reins of the Waterford minors, stepping into a role that is crucial for nurturing young talent in the region. His appointment comes at a time when enhancing the skills and capabilities of young players is a top priority for the Déise hurling community.
O’Connor’s experience will be invaluable as he transitions to the U-20 level. His familiarity with the players and their development from minors to U-20s positions him well for this role. The Waterford hurling community is optimistic about the upcoming seasons, anticipating a strong performance from the teams under O’Connor’s guidance.
As both coaches embark on this new chapter, the focus remains on building a robust foundation for hurling in Waterford. The aim is to cultivate talent that can compete at the highest levels, ensuring that the region remains competitive in the sport for years to come.
With O’Connor and O’Sullivan at the helm, Waterford’s underage ranks are poised for continued success, fostering the next generation of hurling talent.
