Gallagher Brothers Clash with Oasis Fashion Brand Over Trademark
The ongoing feud between the Gallagher brothers and the fashion brand Oasis has intensified as both parties prepare for a legal battle over trademark rights. Brothers Noel Gallagher, aged 58, and Liam Gallagher, aged 52, have enlisted the help of legal specialists from Beck Greener to assert their claim to trademark their band’s logo. The fashion brand, which has transitioned to an online-only model following its administration in 2020, has labeled the brothers as “free riders” for seeking to register the logo.
The trademark application, submitted to the Intellectual Property Office earlier this year, seeks to utilize the iconic logo—featuring the word “Oasis” in white lettering against a black background—across various products. These include clothing, toys, cosmetics, and jewelry. The fashion outlet argues that the Gallagher brothers’ application is “identical” to its own branding and that it would unfairly leverage the reputation associated with their trademark, potentially harming sales of the fashion brand’s goods.
According to a source close to the situation, “Noel and Liam aren’t backing down. Their teams are confident and think they will be successful.” If mediation efforts do not yield a resolution, the matter is expected to escalate to a tribunal for legal adjudication.
Background on the Dispute
The clothing brand Oasis, once a prominent high street retailer, closed all its physical stores after falling into administration in 2020. The company now operates solely online. In its opposition to the Gallagher brothers’ trademark application, the brand stated that allowing the brothers to trademark the logo would provide them with an “unfair advantage” by capitalizing on the brand’s established reputation.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the Gallagher brothers continue their musical comeback, with two scheduled performances in Los Angeles this weekend. Following these shows, they will head to Mexico City before concluding their tour with two final concerts at Wembley Stadium in the UK on September 27 and September 28, 2023.
This dispute underscores the challenges that can arise when entities with similar branding seek to protect their intellectual property. As the Gallagher brothers maintain their stance, the outcome of this case could set a significant precedent for future trademark disputes in the entertainment and fashion industries.
