Celtic Fans Organize Late Entry Protest Against Board at Kilmarnock

Celtic supporters are planning a significant protest during their match against Kilmarnock on September 24, 2023, aimed at the club’s management. Frustration has mounted among fans regarding the board’s perceived inaction in the transfer market, particularly following the team’s recent exit from the UEFA Champions League playoff against Kazakhstan’s Kairat Almaty. During the first leg of that playoff, supporters expressed their discontent with chants of “sack the board.”
The protest comes on the heels of a tumultuous transfer window for the club. While Celtic welcomed winger Sebastian Tounekti and signed free agent Kelechi Iheanacho after his release from Sevilla, they also saw Adam Idah leave for Swansea City. This mixed outcome has only intensified fan dissatisfaction, particularly after the club’s failure to secure key signings.
In response to these issues, a coalition of fan groups has written an open letter to Celtic FC, demanding accountability for what they describe as “repeated failures in transfer dealings.” This letter secured over 400 signatories, reflecting the concerns of tens of thousands of supporters.
Fan Consultation Meeting and Protest Plans
As Celtic prepares to face Kilmarnock at Rugby Park, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports, fans are mobilizing for their protest. A recent consultation meeting was held with the signatories of the open letter, attended by 85 in person and 175 online. The meeting’s minutes will soon be distributed to all participants.
The attendees reached a strong consensus on several key points. These include building on previous “no confidence” votes directed at the board and seeking the removal of key figures: Michael Nicholson (CEO), Chris McKay (CFO), and Peter Lawwell (Chairman). Furthermore, they aim to establish a strategic campaign to advocate for change within the club.
The fan groups also expressed their commitment to creating a democratic and representative body for supporters. A steering group of volunteers is being formed to help coordinate these efforts and to facilitate the upcoming protest, which aims to visibly and vocally demonstrate fan discontent.
Looking Ahead
The protest at Kilmarnock represents a pivotal moment for Celtic fans, who are increasingly vocal about their desire for change. The collective effort signifies a broader movement aiming to influence the club’s direction and management.
A joint statement from the fan groups acknowledged the varied opinions within the community but emphasized the importance of maintaining broad support as they seek to enact positive change. As the match approaches, all eyes will be on Rugby Park, where supporters hope their voices will resonate loud and clear.
Celtic’s management has yet to respond to the open letter or the growing calls for change, leaving fans eager for a dialogue about the club’s future.
