A unique collection of items, including taxidermy and ceramics, is set to attract bidders in upcoming auctions across Ireland. On September 16, 2023, Sean Eacrett Auctions will host a live online event featuring a fully intact taxidermy crocodile measuring 219 cm in length, alongside other notable pieces. This crocodile, auctioned as Lot 886 with an estimated value of €1,000 to €1,500, was once part of a carnival display in Limerick that closed in the 1960s. The auctioneer has emphasized its significance as “a unique piece of Irish social history.”

In addition to the crocodile, the auction will present a well-loved early 20th-century rocking horse (Lot 974), estimated to sell for between €200 to €400. Auction enthusiasts can view the collection at seaneacrettauctions.ie prior to the event, which starts at 10:00 AM.

Iconic Ceramics by Oisín Kelly Featured at Sheppard’s

On the same day, Sheppard’s will showcase two ceramic birds created by the renowned sculptor Oisín Kelly, known for his distinctive work at the Kilkenny Design Workshops until his death in 1981. Kelly’s pieces have become increasingly rare, making this auction particularly noteworthy. The first item, a Snowy Owl (Lot 34), is expected to sell for €500 to €800, while a hand-painted Eider Duck (Lot 62) is estimated at €400 to €600. Both items display the workshop’s stamp on their undersides, certifying their provenance. More information is available at sheppards.ie.

Richard O’Neill’s Art Gains Recognition at Adam’s

The auction landscape has also seen a shift in interest towards the works of Richard O’Neill, a native of Waterford and an often-underappreciated artist who passed away in 2009. An auction of his works at Adam’s on August 14, 2023, highlighted the growing recognition of his talent. Notable sales included “Forest of Chairs Oil,” which sold for €7,500, significantly exceeding its estimated value of €1,000 to €1,500. Other pieces, such as “Solitude” and “The Reader,” also achieved impressive results of €4,000 and €3,600, respectively.

The oil on board “Nude Lying Down” (estimated at €800 to €1,200) sold for €3,400, showcasing a growing appreciation for O’Neill’s contributions to Irish art. Interested parties can explore more about this auction at adams.ie.

As these auctions approach, collectors and enthusiasts alike are eager to see how these distinctive pieces will perform, reflecting both their historical significance and the evolving market for Irish art and collectibles.
