Irish Sports Stars Honor Ricky Hatton Following His Death
Former world champion boxer Ricky Hatton has passed away at the age of 46, with authorities in Greater Manchester confirming they are not treating his death as suspicious. The announcement of his death on October 23, 2023, has prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the sporting world, particularly from Irish athletes who admired the boxing icon.
Tributes from Fellow Athletes
Among those paying tribute is Michael Carruth, an Irish Olympic Gold medallist. Carruth expressed his shock upon hearing the news, recalling his encounters with Hatton throughout their boxing careers. “I was just shocked when my brother told me he was dead. I couldn’t believe it,” Carruth said. “I had to turn on the television to make sure it was true because I just couldn’t believe it.”
He highlighted Hatton’s influence on young boxers, stating, “He was a role model to a lot of young people in this country and in the UK as well, and I’m sure they will be all devastated at his passing.” Despite retiring from professional boxing in 2012, Hatton had recently announced plans for a comeback bout against Eisa Aldah in Dubai this December. Carruth, however, advised against such comebacks, stating, “I don’t believe in people making comebacks. When you don’t do it the first time, don’t do it a second.”
Reflections on a Boxing Legacy
Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane also shared his thoughts on Hatton’s legacy during an appearance on Sky Sports. Keane described Hatton as a “warrior,” noting the dedication he displayed in the ring. “The guy was a warrior. I think that’s why the fans loved him,” Keane remarked. “He left everything in that ring. It’s absolutely shocking.”
Keane recalled the fervor surrounding Hatton’s fights, especially in America, where thousands traveled to support him. This sentiment was echoed by former Ireland striker John Aldridge, who expressed his sadness over the loss on social media, saying: “Awful news to get up to this morning that Ricky Hatton has passed away. I was lucky to have met him on numerous occasions, and he was a top bloke. It’s so sad, far too young to be taken away!”
The impact of Ricky Hatton on the sport of boxing and on his fans is undeniable. His legacy as one of the sport’s most beloved figures will continue to resonate with athletes and fans alike. As tributes continue to pour in, the boxing community mourns the loss of a true icon.
