Dungarvan Garda Unit Stripped After Multiple Assaults Leave Four Injured
URGENT UPDATE: A Co Waterford town is facing a significant policing crisis after four Gardaí were injured in two violent assault incidents just days apart. The attacks have left the local police unit in Dungarvan without essential personnel, forcing authorities to scramble for replacements from surrounding areas.
The incidents occurred on Thursday, July 13, 2023, and Friday, July 14, 2023. During a routine shift, a suspect at the Dungarvan Garda station viciously attacked two Gardaí, resulting in serious injuries that required them to take sick leave. Another assault unfolded on the streets of Dungarvan as officers attempted to arrest a woman, only to be confronted by a group that turned violent.
As a result, five Gardaí have been injured over the two days, with one officer hospitalized. Sources indicate that Garda management may need to reallocate personnel from nearby towns and the city to fill the gap in coverage, raising concerns about public safety.
A shocking video obtained by The Journal shows another assault on Gardaí in Dungarvan, where two men were arrested for attacking officers who were trying to maintain order. The footage reveals the brutal nature of the attack, with officers attempting to control the situation using batons while being kicked and punched.
Local representatives have expressed their outrage and concern. Peter Firth, a representative of the Garda Representative Association (GRA), stated, “These separate attacks go to show the varying risks our members face on a daily basis.” He emphasized that attacking Gardaí is unjustifiable, as they are simply fulfilling their duty to protect the community.
Local Councillor Damien Geoghegan also voiced his support for the injured officers, calling for public assistance in the ongoing investigation. “I wish them a speedy recovery and I would also call on members of the public to show their support,” he said.
The situation remains tense in Dungarvan as the community grapples with the implications of these assaults. The local Garda unit, essential for public safety, is now operating at a significant disadvantage.
As investigations continue, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. The community is being asked to rally behind its officers during this challenging time.
