Authorities confirm that serious clashes broke out on both Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, with protesters unleashing bricks, bottles, and fireworks against Garda officers. Last night, a crowd of 50 to 75 people gathered near the Citywest centre, where peaceful protesters held their phone flashlights in memory of a young girl who was sexually assaulted earlier this week. However, tensions quickly escalated as a woman with a loudspeaker led chants of “Get them out!” against the backdrop of a heavy Garda presence, including a helicopter overhead.

Garda resources, including a water cannon and riot squad units, are on standby as the situation remains volatile. McNulty emphasized, “We will maintain a constant presence of guards in the Citywest complex and surrounding areas.” He warned that police will escalate their response if the situation deteriorates further.

Violent protests also erupted at the asylum accommodation on Basin Lane, where demonstrators hurled projectiles and set bins ablaze, chanting obscenities in a show of support for the Citywest rioters. This alarming trend of violence has raised significant concerns among law enforcement.

Assistant Commissioner Clíodhna Richardson noted the unrest could impact the upcoming Presidential election, stating, “The last few days have resulted in more discussions around the security of the count centre.” As the election approaches, authorities are particularly vigilant against potential disruptions.
