UPDATE: Four new public electric vehicle (EV) charging points will be installed across east Limerick over the next six months, local officials confirmed at the October 2023 meeting of the Kilmallock-Cappamore Municipal District. This exciting development is set to significantly benefit electric vehicle owners in the region as demand for charging infrastructure surges.

The new fast charging stations will be strategically located at the following key sites: the public library in Kilmallock, Sycamore Drive in Bruff, the Square in Caherconlish, and Monastery Road in Doon. This rollout comes in response to increasing inquiries regarding EV infrastructure, particularly from Cllr Brigid Teefy, who sought updates on the status and timeline of installation amid the growing popularity of electric vehicles across the country.

According to John O’Leary, acting senior executive engineer at the council’s Transportation and Mobility Directorate, the installation process is already underway. “Following the appointment of Weev Limited as the Charge Point Operator for the Limerick EV Pilot Sites Project in Q2 2025, the Detailed Design Phase has now been completed,” O’Leary stated. The contractor for civil works commenced operations in September 2023, with a target completion date set for November 2025.

The new 100KW fast chargers are anticipated to be installed, tested, and operational by the end of March 2026, pending completion of essential connections through ESB. This timeline reflects a proactive approach to enhancing electric vehicle charging options, critical as more motorists transition to eco-friendly transportation solutions.

As the region moves forward with this initiative, local residents and EV owners can expect a more robust and accessible charging network, crucial for supporting the shift towards sustainable transport.

Stay tuned for further updates as this project develops and transforms east Limerick’s EV infrastructure landscape. This essential step not only improves convenience for electric vehicle users but also plays a pivotal role in reducing carbon emissions and promoting greener energy solutions in the community.
