Connolly Urged to Condemn Wallace’s Controversial Video NOW
UPDATE: Newly elected President Catherine Connolly is facing urgent calls to condemn a controversial video posted by her supporter and former MEP Mick Wallace. The video, shared on Saturday, features an AI-generated image of Connolly wearing a Tricolour balaclava and a Palestinian keffiyeh while holding an AK-47.
The backlash intensified as Wallace took to X to express his views, stating, “Irish Mainstream Media did their utmost to protect the Establishment and the interests of Western Imperialism as they tried to undermine Catherine Connolly’s Presidential bid. They failed…” His comments have raised significant concerns about the implications for Connolly’s presidency and her message of unity.
Barry Andrews, a Fianna Fáil MEP, described the video as “shocking,” emphasizing that it contradicts Connolly’s vision of being a president for all. He stated, “Catherine Connolly has said she wants to unite the people and be a President for everybody, and he [Wallace] thinks this is an appropriate way to mark the occasion. It does raise a concern about what type of Presidency we are going to be dealing with. I would like to see the President condemning this.”
Andrews further criticized Wallace’s attack on the Irish media, likening it to tactics used by right-wing figures such as Nigel Farage and Donald Trump. He warned that delegitimizing the media can lead to harm against journalists and ultimately undermine democracy. “Other institutions of the State can begin to be eroded as a result. Catherine Connolly’s campaign needs to face up to this,” he added.
As the controversy unfolds, many are questioning how Connolly will respond to the growing pressure from both political figures and the public. A spokesperson for Connolly has been approached for comment but has not yet responded.
This developing story raises critical questions about the direction of Connolly’s presidency and the role of political allies in shaping public perception. As reactions continue to pour in, the urgency for Connolly to address the situation directly is more pressing than ever.
Stay tuned for updates as this story evolves and more reactions come to light.
