URGENT UPDATE: Misleading reports regarding fire safety at the Sailors Rest accommodation centre in Buncrana have sparked concerns among residents and the community. Recent clarifications reveal that allegations of “serious fire safety concerns” are unfounded and have created unnecessary panic.

Authorities confirm that the IPAS inspection report did not label the Buncrana centre as posing a “major fire risk.” Instead, it highlighted procedural matters related to a single fire drill exercise conducted on January 7, 2025. The centre, which houses 135 registered residents, was found to be “well-run,” with residents expressing satisfaction with their living conditions.

During the January drill, only 86 residents were present due to legitimate commitments such as night shifts and medical appointments, not as a failure to evacuate. It is crucial to note that the centre has maintained rigorous fire safety standards, including 11 fire exits and 160 smoke detectors across the facility.

Following the inspection, the Buncrana centre fortified its emergency procedures, enhancing communication and varying drill schedules. The next unannounced fire drill on March 15, 2025, showed a marked improvement, with 124 residents successfully evacuated in just six minutes.

A previous unannounced drill on December 8, 2024, also demonstrated effective emergency preparedness, with all 53 residents on-site evacuating in a swift 5 minutes and 30 seconds. These results underscore the centre’s strong fire-safety performance.

The operators of the Sailors Rest centre have expressed deep concern about the misrepresentation of their facility, emphasizing that such inaccurate reporting can incite hostility and endanger both residents and staff, especially in a climate where accommodation centres have been victims of arson attacks.

In light of these revelations, Donegal Daily acknowledges that their original reporting fell short of journalistic standards and has issued an apology to the centre’s operators and residents for any distress caused.

This situation is evolving rapidly, and authorities urge everyone to remain informed about the actual conditions and safety measures in place. For residents and families, understanding the truth is vital for peace of mind and community safety.

As this story develops, further updates will be provided, emphasizing the importance of accurate reporting in maintaining community trust and safety.
