Volunteers Unite for Urgent Christmas Charity Dinner in Dublin
UPDATE: Volunteers are rallying in Dublin for the annual Christmas charity dinner at the RDS, set for December 25, 2025. This urgent event aims to serve 550 guests in need, with preparations already underway as volunteers gear up to provide meals and companionship.
In a packed room at Ely House, enthusiasm surged as volunteers eagerly raised their hands to become table hosts for the charity event, organized by the Knights of Columbanus. Volunteers are required to attend an induction day, which just took place on December 7, before diving into their crucial roles during the festive season.
Among the dedicated volunteers is Grace O’Dowd, who has traveled from her home in London for the past 15 years to serve as a table host. “Meeting and talking with the guests is my favorite part of the day,” she shared, emphasizing the importance of treating everyone with dignity. Grace will be on the ground on December 23 and 24 for setup, then volunteering from 7 AM to 4 PM on Christmas Day.
This year’s event will not only host guests but also prepare an astonishing 5,500 meals for local charities such as Alone and Meals on Wheels. Trevor Macnamara, chair of the organizing committee, confirmed that preparations began back in September, with volunteer registration opening on October 1. “Every year we are oversubscribed with people wanting to help,” he stated.
New volunteer Orla Conlon, who has participated for three years, emphasized the emotional impact of the event. “It’s the only time of the year that guests have people who actually sit and listen to them,” she said. Her commitment is evident as she starts her day at 7 AM on Christmas, welcoming guests arriving by 9 AM.
Meanwhile, fellow volunteer Dara Golden, who previously served drinks, will take on a new role behind the bar this year. She believes the volunteers gain as much from the experience as the guests do. “You’re not thinking about yourself; you’re thinking about somebody else,” she explained, highlighting the mutual benefits of community engagement.
The event has a rich history, marking its 101st year in operation. It follows the legacy of the late Brother Kevin Crowley, founder of the Capuchin Day Centre, who dedicated his life to aiding the marginalized. The volunteer group held a special mass in his memory during the induction day, reinforcing their commitment to his vision of compassion and service.
As Christmas approaches, the urgency of this charitable mission intensifies. Volunteers like Grace, Orla, and Dara are not just providing meals, but creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere for those who often feel isolated or forgotten. The impact of their service resonates throughout the community, reminding us all of the power of giving back.
Stay tuned as we follow the developments leading up to this heartwarming event. The RDS will be a beacon of hope this Christmas, with volunteers working tirelessly to ensure that every guest feels valued and cared for.
