Greek Farmers Disrupt Flights in Crete Over Subsidy Delays
Farmers in Greece staged a significant protest on March 18, 2024, disrupting operations at the Nikos Kazantzakis International Airport in Crete. The demonstration was prompted by ongoing delays in the disbursement of EU-backed agricultural subsidies, a situation exacerbated by a recent scandal involving fraudulent claims. Protesters managed to breach security measures, clashing with riot police who responded with tear gas and stun grenades to maintain order.
Images broadcasted by local media depicted a large group of farmers gathered on the tarmac of the airport in Heraklion, prompting immediate flight suspensions. The unrest did not remain contained to Crete; similar clashes erupted near the airport in Chania, with reports of farmers throwing rocks and even overturning a police patrol vehicle. At least two individuals sustained injuries during these confrontations.
These protests form part of a larger campaign by farmers across Greece, who have mobilized thousands of tractors and agricultural vehicles to obstruct key transportation routes. The demonstrations have intermittently halted traffic at border crossings and major highways, raising concerns about potential disruptions to vital supply chains. In a related incident on March 15, riot police clashed with farmers attempting to block access to the airport in Thessaloniki.
The backdrop to these protests is a review of subsidy applications following revelations of widespread fraudulent claims for EU agricultural support. Farmers have expressed their frustration, arguing that the delays are tantamount to collective punishment, leaving many in financial distress and unable to prepare for the upcoming planting season. The situation has been further complicated by an outbreak of goat and sheep pox, resulting in significant livestock culls across the sector.
Greek Minister of Rural Development and Food, Costas Tsiaras, emphasized the importance of dialogue in addressing these issues while asserting that certain boundaries should not be crossed. Meanwhile, Michalis Chrisochoidis, Minister for Public Order, reiterated the government’s willingness to engage with protest leaders but warned against the disruption of major transit points.
The controversy surrounding subsidy payments stems from a scandal that led to the resignation of five senior government officials in June 2023. Investigations led by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) have identified approximately 324 individuals allegedly involved in fraudulent claims, amounting to a staggering €19.6 million. This inquiry has been described as linked to a “systematic large-scale subsidy fraud scheme and money-laundering activities,” as stated by the EPPO at the end of October 2023.
Protests by Greek farmers are not new, with past demonstrations frequently resulting in extensive road blockades that have disrupted travel between the northern and southern regions of the country. The current unrest underscores the ongoing challenges facing the agricultural community amidst financial uncertainty and bureaucratic delays.
