Oscars Snub Brigitte Bardot Sparks Controversy Over In Memoriam
The 2026 Academy Awards faced backlash after the omission of iconic French actress and singer Brigitte Bardot from the televised In Memoriam tribute. Despite an extended segment honoring notable artists and filmmakers who passed away in the previous year, Bardot’s absence drew significant attention and sparked heated discussions online.
While the tribute included heartfelt acknowledgments from stars like Billy Crystal for filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, producer Michele Reiner, the decision to exclude Bardot raised eyebrows. Barbra Streisand also performed a song from her 1973 film The Way We Were to honor her friend and co-star Robert Redford. Viewers noted that with the additional time allocated for tributes, Bardot’s omission felt particularly conspicuous.
Despite being left out of the live event, Bardot was still acknowledged on the Academy’s website in the In Memoriam longlist. The reactions from social media were mixed, with some users expressing concern that political views may have influenced the decision. One user commented on X, “I assume they were excluded because of their politics, but the job of the Academy is to remember them for their contributions to Cinema.” Others, however, were less sympathetic, with one remarking, “Not really sad that a woman convicted several times for hate speech was excluded.”
Political Controversies Surrounding Bardot
Bardot’s exclusion is not an isolated incident in the history of the Academy Awards. Last year, the Academy faced criticism for failing to include another French star, Alain Delon, in its tribute. Delon, known for films such as The Leopard and The Swimming Pool, also attracted controversy for his political views, which included misogynistic remarks. In a recent interview, he acknowledged his past, stating, “I said I slapped a woman? Yes. And I should have added that I received more slaps than I gave.”
Bardot, widely recognized by her initials B.B., was a trailblazer in French cinema during the 1950s and 1960s, featuring in notable films such as Jean-Luc Godard’s Le Mépris. After retiring from acting, she became an outspoken advocate for animal rights. Bardot passed away at her villa in La Madrague in December 2023.
However, her legacy has been overshadowed by her far-right political affiliations, particularly her ties to France’s National Front party, along with her controversial statements on race and immigration. Over the years, Bardot was convicted five times in French courts for inciting racial hatred. In her final book, Mon BBcédire, published shortly before her death, she declared that right-wing politicians were the “only urgent remedy to the agony of France.”
Public Response and Legacy Debate
The decision to exclude Bardot from the Oscars has prompted a broader conversation about the criteria for honoring individuals in the film industry. Some fans argue that the Academy should focus solely on artistic contributions, regardless of personal beliefs. Others assert that Bardot’s convictions warrant her exclusion from such tributes.
At a recent tribute to Bardot at the Césars, France’s equivalent of the Oscars, the audience reacted with boos, with one attendee shouting “racist!” This incident underscores the divided opinions surrounding her legacy. Bardot’s impact on cinema is undeniable, yet her political stances have left a complex and controversial narrative that continues to evolve.
As the debate rages on, the Academy’s choices reflect the delicate balance between honoring artistic achievement and addressing the implications of an artist’s personal beliefs. Bardot’s omission from the Oscars In Memoriam segment serves as a poignant reminder of this ongoing discourse within the entertainment industry.
