Bruno Martín’s ‘Luger’ Explores Loyalty and Violence in Madrid

Bruno Martín’s debut feature film, ‘Luger’, delves into the complex themes of loyalty and honour within the criminal underbelly of Madrid. The film, which combines dark humour with intense violence, has garnered attention on the international film festival circuit since its initial screenings in 2023.

Set against the gritty backdrop of an industrial estate on the outskirts of Spain’s capital, ‘Luger’ follows Rafa, a man ensnared in a cycle of violence sparked by the theft of a historical German pistol from World War II. This weapon, the legendary Luger, carries with it a narrative steeped in memory. Martín describes the gun as a symbolic axis linking the struggles of local criminals to the broader historical context of European conflict.

Exploring Themes of Redemption

The film balances its moments of dark humour with extreme violence, creating a rhythm that immerses viewers in the characters’ lives. Martín aims to challenge audiences, encouraging them to empathise with the characters’ struggles. “It’s a film that will make you have a good and a bad time,” he explains, adding that the intention is for viewers to be emotionally engaged throughout the experience.

Martín, who also takes on the role of Charly—a morally ambiguous character—plays alongside actors David Sainz and Mario Mayo. Together, they navigate a narrative where friendship, forgiveness, and redemption emerge amidst a landscape rife with crime and betrayal. The film’s unconventional approach ensures that it maintains a fast pace, leaving little room for viewers to disengage.

As noted by Martín, “We wanted people to care about the characters, not the explosions.” This focus on emotional depth has resonated with festival audiences, with many reportedly moved to tears by the film’s conclusion.

Visually and narratively, ‘Luger’ draws inspiration from cinematic heavyweights such as Quentin Tarantino and Guy Ritchie. Despite these influences, Martín has successfully crafted a film that stands on its own. The film’s soundtrack, composed by Levi Star, enhances its Spanish and visceral tone. Traditional instruments like percussion and flamenco clapping provide a rhythmic backdrop that underscores the film’s moments of comedy, drama, and tension.

‘Luger’ has been well received at various film festivals, including the Fantastic Fest in Austin and the Sitges International Film Festival, where it received accolades such as the Crossovers Grand Prix in Strasbourg. After spending over three years developing the script, Martín and his co-writer Santiago Taboada view this film as the culmination of their aspirations. “We want to continue making films, telling real stories, and moving the audience,” they affirm.
