Dermot Bannon Reflects on Insecurities and Health Challenges

Dermot Bannon, the well-known host of the television show Room To Improve, has candidly shared his struggles with insecurities associated with his career as a TV presenter. Despite his prominent presence on screens, Bannon revealed that he often grapples with self-doubt, particularly regarding his appearance and knowledge outside of his architectural expertise.
In an interview with the Irish Independent, Bannon expressed discomfort with his on-screen image. “I have tons of insecurities,” he stated. He elaborated on how his role in the public eye magnifies these feelings. “Doing the job I do shines a light on you, so I’m insecure about how I look. I see myself on television and think I shouldn’t have worn something because it makes my stomach stick out. I wish I could never see myself on television.”
Beyond his appearance, Bannon also mentioned feelings of inadequacy in social settings. He often feels out of his depth during conversations that stray beyond architecture. He shared, “I meet a lot of people and people love having you talk at events. I know a lot about architecture, but I’m not great on general knowledge, so I sometimes feel out of my depth in conversations.”
The pressures of public speaking weigh heavily on him as well. Bannon admitted that appearances on shows like The Late Late Show instill a significant level of anxiety. “Having to do The Late Late Show puts the fear of God into me,” he confessed.
Embarrassing Moments and Health Scares
Bannon’s insecurities extend to his professional experiences, including moments of embarrassment. He recounted an incident where he had to film a segment 17 times due to mispronouncing the name of a designer. “I thought that I’d never work in television again,” he recalled, highlighting the pressures he feels in front of the camera.
In addition to these personal challenges, Bannon has also faced serious health issues. Last summer, he suffered a pulmonary embolism, an experience that he described as both frightening and enlightening. He revealed that he had missed critical signs of his condition, stating, “The scary bit was all over by the time I discovered I was sick.”
Bannon had been traveling in Portugal when he first experienced symptoms, but he noted that the local hospital did not immediately recognize the severity of his condition. “I was really lucky to get to the hospital on time,” he said, explaining that he had exhibited two out of four key symptoms of a pulmonary embolism: shortness of breath and sharp pains on his side.
He admitted that he didn’t realize the seriousness of his situation until he thought he might be having a heart attack. “The signs weren’t enough to make me panic,” he stated. By the time he received treatment, he was already improving. “I got the first injection into my tummy in the hospital and that was me on the mend.”
Reflecting on his health scare, Bannon acknowledged the mental health implications of dealing with such a shock. “It was only afterwards I questioned what could have happened,” he said, emphasizing the profound impact of the experience on his overall well-being.
Dermot Bannon’s openness about his insecurities and health challenges resonates with many, illuminating the often-hidden struggles that come with fame and the importance of addressing mental health alongside physical health.
