Experts Reveal the Right Way to Enjoy Cheese on Toast

Cheese on toast enthusiasts may want to reconsider their condiment application, as new recommendations from experts challenge long-held practices. According to research from Lea & Perrins, the classic British snack is best enjoyed when Worcestershire sauce is spread on the toast before the cheese, rather than the other way around.
For nearly 190 years, Lea & Perrins has been a staple in kitchens across the United Kingdom, and the company now aims to clarify the correct method for maximizing flavor. The updated product labels emphasize that the sauce should be applied directly onto the bread, followed by a generous layer of cheese.
Understanding the Flavor Dynamics
Thiago Rapp, the company’s Director of Taste Elevation, stated, “For 190 years we’ve known where the sauce belongs — directly on the toast. Our new label is a reminder of toast, then sauce, then cheese. This isn’t a new trick. It’s the original one. We just forgot to mention it.”
Celebrity chef Gizzi Erskine echoed this sentiment, sharing her surprise at the revelation. “I’ve loved Lea & Perrins on cheese on toast for years, but flipping the order really does unleash so much more flavor,” she remarked. “Putting the sauce on top means it just slides off, but under the cheese is where the magic happens. The Lea & Perrins soaks in and transforms the toast into pure umami heaven.”
The Survey Insights
A recent survey sheds light on the preferences and practices of cheese on toast lovers in the UK. Findings reveal that a remarkable 85 percent of respondents enjoy the dish, with a significant 58 percent of those who apply sauce last reporting that it often spills off the edges. Furthermore, 34 percent indicated that cheese does not melt properly or burns when placed atop the sauce.
Interestingly, one in five participants admitted to struggling to achieve the desired level of sauciness in their toasties. The survey also highlighted the emotional connection many have with cheese on toast, with 70 percent stating that it serves as a comforting meal, often reminiscent of childhood.
Among those surveyed, 40 percent expressed a preference for their cheese on toast with Worcestershire sauce, and more than half claimed to have honed their personal technique over time. As the methods of preparation are refined, the classic dish continues to capture the hearts—and taste buds—of many.
As more people discover the optimal way to enjoy cheese on toast, it is clear that sometimes, the simplest culinary techniques can lead to the most rewarding experiences. Whether one is a long-time fan or a newcomer to the dish, following this new guidance may unlock a newfound appreciation for this beloved snack.
