Maura Derrane, a prominent figure on RTE, has shared insights into her decision to step away from the popular afternoon show, Today, as it prepares to return to screens on September 22, 2023. After more than 13 years of co-hosting with Daithi O’Se, Derrane made the difficult choice to reduce her involvement in the show following the pandemic.

Reflecting on this pivotal change, Derrane expressed that many industry peers advised against her decision. In an interview with RSVP, she revealed, “Many people, within the industry, advised me not to do it when they heard. I kept it very much to myself before telling Daithi and then RTE because they could have said no.” Despite the reservations, Derrane believes that a part-time role has ultimately revitalized the show. “To be honest, I think the show benefits. I am there three shows a week and Sinead comes in for two shows and refreshes things so it works,” she noted.

As Today gears up for its 14th season, the show’s dynamic continues to evolve. Derrane credits its longevity to its unique location in Cork, distinct from Dublin, and the management style under Colm Crowley, the head of RTE Cork. The relaxed environment they operate in allows for creative freedom, which, according to Derrane, enhances viewer engagement.

“When Daithi and I go off script, that is when our audience is most engaged,” she explained. The producers and researchers actively monitor audience reactions, allowing the hosts to adapt the show in real-time to meet viewer preferences. This adaptability is key to maintaining the show’s relevance and appeal.

The rapport between Derrane and O’Se extends beyond their on-screen chemistry. “We know every aspect, good or bad, of each other at this stage. We know when each other is stressed out or tired,” she remarked. This strong personal connection contributes significantly to their collaborative success, enabling them to connect authentically with their audience.

Earlier this month, RTE confirmed the return of Today, which airs every Monday to Friday from 15:30 to 17:40. Daithi co-hosts alongside Sinead on Mondays and Tuesdays, while Derrane joins him from Wednesdays through Fridays. The 13th season concluded with a summer hiatus on May 30, and anticipation is building for the new season.

In a recent Instagram announcement, O’Se expressed his excitement for the return, stating, “Well folks, the Galway races are over. The Fleadh Ceoil has come and gone. The Rose of Tralee is finished. So is the fine weather. Look at that… cloudy and rainy. That means only one thing. The Today show is back live at half three from Cork on the 22nd of September.”

As the show prepares for its comeback, Derrane’s reflections highlight the importance of adaptability and personal connections in television. With a fresh approach and ongoing viewer engagement, RTE’s Today is poised to continue its legacy of captivating audiences across Ireland and beyond.
