HSE Warns of Covid Spread as New Symptoms Emerge in Ireland
The Health Service Executive (HSE) in Ireland has issued a crucial warning regarding Covid-19, urging individuals to stay at home for a minimum of 48 hours after symptoms have resolved. This advisory comes as the country reports a rise in cases, attributed primarily to the new Stratus variant.
Recent data from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) reveals that there were **446 new Covid-19 cases** reported nationwide over the past week, an increase from **427 cases** the previous week. The Stratus variant, also known as XFG, now constitutes **86.7%** of all known infections in Ireland. The highest number of new cases was recorded in **Dublin** with **190 cases**, followed by **Cork** with **104** and **Louth** with **65**. In contrast, the lowest figures were seen in **Longford** (5), **Leitrim** (6), and **Carlow** (7).
Symptoms and Guidance from Health Officials
The World Health Organization has categorized the Stratus variant as a “variant under monitoring.” While it does not appear to result in more severe illness, it spreads more quickly than earlier strains, a trend reflected in the recent increase in Covid-19 cases in Ireland. Alongside the rise in Covid cases, flu infections have also surged, with **88 cases** reported last week, significantly up from **41** the week prior. Additionally, **17** cases of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) were confirmed.
Dr. Kader, a medical professional who provides health advice on TikTok under the handle @ask.doctor.k, has highlighted that the Stratus variant presents symptoms in a different order compared to previous variants. He noted that symptoms typically begin in the ear, nose, and throat, often manifesting as a hoarse voice or severe sore throat. Many patients also report gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, vomiting, bloating, and acid reflux.
Dr. Kader stated, “The new variant seems to be starting with ear, nose, and throat symptoms. A lot of people are complaining about a really hoarse voice or a super sore throat. It also seems to present with more GI symptoms.”
While the doctor emphasized that infections from the Stratus variant tend to be milder, he pointed out its highly contagious nature. He explained, “You may have noticed that everyone is getting sick this week… part of the reason why infections are spreading fast is because the weather is changing, it’s getting a bit colder, and people are staying indoors more, just passing the bugs to each other.”
Public Health Recommendations
To mitigate the spread of Covid-19, the HSE is advising the public to adhere to its guidelines. Individuals experiencing symptoms should remain at home until **48 hours** after their symptoms have mostly or fully resolved. The HSE warns: “If you have any symptoms of Covid and feel unwell, you should stay at home until 48 hours after your symptoms are mostly or fully gone and avoid contact with other people, especially those at higher risk from Covid.”
The HSE has also reminded the public to remain vigilant for all **18 recognized Covid symptoms**, reinforcing the importance of health awareness in the ongoing effort to control the virus’s spread.
As the situation develops, the HSE continues to monitor and provide updates to ensure public safety during this time.
