Joe Duffy Advocates for Health Awareness Post-Retirement

Following his retirement, Joe Duffy, the former host of Liveline, emphasizes the importance of health awareness, particularly regarding respiratory illnesses. His comments come in light of a recent study highlighting the low awareness of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) among older adults and their caregivers, despite it being a significant cause of hospitalizations during winter months.
RSV, a common respiratory virus, poses severe health risks for adults aged 65 and older. Complications from RSV can include pneumonia and exacerbation of chronic conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and heart disease. Recent analysis indicates that the percentage of patients hospitalized with RSV this winter is comparable to those hospitalized with influenza.
Raising Awareness of RSV
The findings were presented at a symposium titled “Well into the Future: Protecting the Health of Older Generations,” which brought together patient groups, healthcare professionals, and older adults. Duffy, who chaired the event, stated, “As someone who has recently retired, I’m more conscious than ever of the need to be proactive about my health. It’s no secret that many things become harder as you age, and recovering from what might seem like a routine infection is one of them.”
Through his personal experiences and observations of older family members, Duffy has come to understand the disruptive nature of winter viruses. He believes that increasing awareness of RSV is crucial. “Too many people simply don’t know about RSV or the risks it carries for older adults. We all need to be mindful, to look out for ourselves and each other and to take the simple steps that can protect us, whether that’s recognizing the symptoms early, talking to our doctors, or making informed choices about vaccination,” he added.
The study revealed that while awareness is limited, respondents acknowledge the risks associated with RSV. About 85% of individuals expressed concern that an RSV infection could lead to severe complications for an older adult in their care.
Need for Improved Vaccination Awareness
Orlaith Gavan, Country Medical Director for Pfizer Healthcare Ireland, highlighted the underestimation of RSV as a threat to older adults and high-risk individuals in Ireland. “Our research shows this clearly as only 8% of respondents believe they have ever had RSV, when almost everyone has been infected at some point. While RSV infection is often routine, it is essential that those at higher risk, particularly older adults, understand the threat it poses.”
The National Immunisation Committee (NIAC) has recommended vaccination against RSV for all adults aged over 65. Despite this recommendation, the study found that only 18% of older adults were aware that a vaccine is available. Nevertheless, support for RSV vaccinations is strong, with 85% of caregivers believing they should be freely accessible for older adults.
In several countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, and Sweden, vaccines have been made available free of charge for older adults, yielding positive results. In Scotland, a programme introduced last year offered a free RSV vaccine to individuals aged 75 to 79, achieving a vaccination uptake of almost 69%. This initiative led to a 62% reduction in RSV hospitalizations.
The need for greater awareness and proactive measures against RSV is clear. As the population of older adults in Ireland is expected to grow significantly in the coming years, the emphasis on health education and preventive vaccination becomes increasingly vital.
