New HIQA Review Examines Alcohol’s Impact on Mental Health
The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has launched a comprehensive review to assess the connections between alcohol consumption and mental health outcomes. This initiative aims to update Ireland’s alcohol guidelines, which were last revised in 2015. The review will address the relationship between different drinking levels and their effects on hospital admissions and alcohol-related mortality.
HIQA has published a protocol outlining the scope of the review, which is part of a broader analysis initiated in August 2023. This ongoing analysis seeks to quantify the risks associated with alcohol consumption, specifically focusing on its links to mortality and hospital admissions in Ireland. The findings from both projects are expected to inform updates to the country’s low-risk alcohol guidelines.
According to Michelle O’Neill, the deputy director of health technology assessment at HIQA, “The guidelines are an important tool for raising awareness of the risks associated with alcohol use. They also assist people in making informed decisions about their alcohol intake.”
The current guidelines recommend that women consume no more than 11 standard drinks per week and men limit their intake to 17 standard drinks. O’Neill emphasized that one of the primary public health objectives today is to reduce and prevent harmful levels of alcohol consumption.
HIQA’s research aims to provide the Department of Health with a current understanding of how alcohol impacts overall health in Ireland. This review is particularly timely given the increasing focus on public health and the need for clear, evidence-based recommendations.
Both reports from HIQA are anticipated to be published in 2026, potentially reshaping how alcohol consumption is managed and understood within the context of public health. As these guidelines evolve, they could play a crucial role in informing policy and fostering healthier drinking habits among the Irish population.
