President Michael D Higgins Remains Hospitalized with Infection
President Michael D Higgins is currently hospitalized as he receives treatment for a localized infection. His office, Áras an Uachtaráin, confirmed that he is in “good spirits” and has shown a “significant improvement” since being admitted to St James’s Hospital on October 26, 2025.
In a statement released by his office, it was noted that the President has started a course of antibiotics to combat the infection. The medical team overseeing his care has recommended that he remain in the hospital to continue this treatment. According to the latest update, there are no significant concerns regarding his condition.
Health Status and Future Plans
As of now, doctors will determine the appropriate time for President Higgins to be discharged and return to his residence in Phoenix Park. At 84 years old, he has faced various health challenges in recent years but has continued to fulfill his presidential duties. Notably, he spent several days in the hospital last year following a stroke, which impacted his left side and caused balance issues. Despite these challenges, he stated that the stroke did not affect his cognitive abilities, and he was able to continue his responsibilities without cancelations.
In light of his upcoming departure from office, President Higgins is focused on ensuring a smooth transition. On the evening of October 28, he reached out to Catherine Connolly, who is set to be inaugurated as the next President of Ireland on November 11, 2025. In his congratulatory statement, he expressed his support for her as she prepares for her new role.
Legacy and Transition
President Higgins’ current term is scheduled to end on November 10, 2025, leaving him with two weeks in office before his successor takes over. He cast his vote in the recent Presidential Election on October 24, 2025, alongside his wife, Sabina Higgins.
Throughout his presidency, Higgins has been recognized for his commitment to various social issues and his engagement with the public, despite personal health setbacks. His tenure has been marked by efforts to address national concerns and promote a positive image of Ireland on the international stage.
As he continues to receive care, the nation remains hopeful for his swift recovery and successful transition of leadership.
