Annmarie O’Connor Inspires with Candid Speech on Resilience
During a powerful evening at the Irish Examiner’s flagship event, ieStyle Live, held on October 5, 2023, in Cork City Hall, Annmarie O’Connor captivated an audience with her moving story of resilience in the face of adversity. The fashion editor shared her personal journey following a diagnosis of early-onset Parkinson’s disease, describing it as “the moment my life fell apart.”
O’Connor delivered an emotional speech as part of the Women of Impact series, encouraging attendees to find connection and strength during difficult times. Her poignant message, “All rubble looks the same,” resonated deeply with the audience, emphasizing the shared human experience of coping with loss, whether it be health-related or emotional.
Facing Adversity with Honesty
Reflecting on her diagnosis, O’Connor recalled how a simple twitch marked the beginning of a significant life change. She expressed the profound sense of grief that accompanied the realization of her altered future, stating, “I felt ashamed. The fashion editor-turned-spinster with a willful brain disorder was not on my vision board.” This candid admission highlighted her struggle with accepting a new identity, one that diverged from the life she had envisioned.
Her journey took a transformative turn when she decided to share her experience publicly, first featured in Weekend magazine. O’Connor described this moment as “coming out of the medical closet,” stating, “Parkinson’s might be the plot twist, but I was the author. What I didn’t anticipate was the impact my words would have.” Her commitment to advocacy grew from this experience, evolving from an accidental advocate to one by choice.
The audience responded with a standing ovation, a testament to the emotional weight of her message. O’Connor’s recently published memoir, Twitch: My Life with Parkinson’s, further explores her life’s challenges and triumphs. She concluded her speech with a powerful reminder about resilience: “When something in your life falls apart, it doesn’t owe you an explanation. It’s your willingness to meet yourself where you are that counts.”
A Night of Celebration and Community
Hosted by comedian and actor Deirdre O’Kane, the event also showcased the incredible work of the Cork Simon Community. Chair Christine Moloney spoke about the charity’s mission, emphasizing how “compassion and kindness change lives.” The evening featured a drinks reception followed by a three-course dinner and a fashion show curated by stylist Corina Gaffey, highlighting the latest trends from various Irish retailers.
As models walked the runway, they showcased designs from notable brands including Brown Thomas, M&S, and local boutiques such as Blue Fig and Vanilla Boutique. The event also included a performance by Cork singer Precious Abimbola, adding a vibrant touch to the proceedings.
In addition to the inspiring speeches and fashion displays, attendees participated in a competition for the Dressed with Personality Winner, chosen by beauty editor Sally Foran. The winner received a €1,000 gift card to Douglas Court. Guests also had the chance to win a luxurious €5,000 diamond necklace from DesignWorks.
Overall, ieStyle Live not only celebrated fashion and beauty but also fostered a sense of community, resilience, and hope, leaving a lasting impact on all who attended.
