A well-respected figure in the Limerick Diocese, Canon Willie Fitzmaurice, has retired after more than 50 years of dedicated service. His retirement was marked by a special celebration in Croom’s Town Park during an open-air Mass on August 15, 2023, coinciding with the Feast of Our Lady’s Assumption.

Over his extensive career, Canon Fitzmaurice has held positions in several parishes, including St John’s in Limerick city, Kilmallock, and more recently, Croom and Banogue. The event drew a crowd of over 200 attendees, who gathered to honor his contributions to the community.

During the Mass, Canon Fitzmaurice reflected on his time in service. “It’s been a pleasure to serve the different communities over the last 50 years. Each role was demanding, but each of them was very worthwhile,” he stated. He acknowledged the significant responsibility he held in working with local schools and parishioners.

Also honored at the event was Tom Moloney, a long-serving sacristan from Croom, who is also retiring. The recognition of both men highlights the impact they have had within their respective communities.

Originally from the parish of Killeedy, Canon Fitzmaurice plans to remain active within the Limerick Diocese post-retirement. He expressed a desire to enjoy his newfound free time, saying, “The thing about retirement is to be able to enjoy it, enjoy life, as one should do at any stage in life.”

In addition to his extensive clerical work, Canon Fitzmaurice is known for his athletic achievements, having been part of the 1973 All-Ireland winning hurling panel. His legacy extends beyond the church, touching the lives of many in the community through both his spiritual and sporting contributions.

As he embarks on this new chapter, the community of Limerick and beyond will undoubtedly feel the absence of a dedicated and beloved leader. Canon Fitzmaurice’s commitment to service has left an indelible mark on the lives he has touched throughout his remarkable five-decade career.
