Health Expert Reveals Two-Ingredient Drink for Better Sleep and Blood Sugar

Dr. Eric Berg, a licensed chiropractor and health advocate, has shared insights on the benefits of a simple homemade drink that may aid in blood sugar regulation and assist with weight management. His recommendation centers around apple cider vinegar, which he claims can be particularly effective when consumed before sleep.
In a recent video titled “Why take apple cider vinegar (ACV) before bed,” Dr. Berg explains the role of acetic acid, the primary component of apple cider vinegar. He emphasizes that this acid is known for its anti-glycaemic properties, which could help lower blood sugar levels. “Acetic acid may also help reduce your blood sugars in the morning,” he states, highlighting the phenomenon known as the dawn effect, where blood sugar levels rise in the early hours due to the liver’s production of glucose.
Understanding high blood sugar levels is vital, especially for individuals with diabetes. The Health Service Executive (HSE) notes that symptoms can develop slowly and may include increased thirst, fatigue, and blurred vision. Factors contributing to elevated blood sugar include dietary choices, physical activity, medications, and stress. Dr. Berg’s discussion points to the potential of acetic acid to slow the release of sugar into the bloodstream by affecting digestive enzymes, which can be beneficial for those managing blood sugar levels.
Research has indicated that apple cider vinegar may enhance insulin sensitivity, allowing the body to respond more effectively to insulin. A growing body of evidence supports claims that regular consumption can lead to lower fasting blood glucose levels. For instance, a study conducted in 2023 revealed that participants with type 2 diabetes who consumed 30 ml of apple cider vinegar daily saw improvements in their haemoglobin A1c levels compared to a control group.
Potential Health Benefits and Recommendations
While the potential health advantages of apple cider vinegar are significant, the NHS cautions against viewing it as a standalone treatment for any medical condition. Although some studies suggest benefits for blood sugar regulation and weight management, more extensive research is necessary to solidify these claims.
An earlier study from 2018 examined overweight adults on a calorie-deficient diet; those who incorporated two tablespoons (approximately 30 ml) of apple cider vinegar into their daily routine achieved more substantial weight loss than those who did not. This adds to the growing interest in the compound for weight management.
To safely incorporate apple cider vinegar into one’s diet, it is essential to dilute it with water. Starting with a small amount, such as one teaspoon, and gradually increasing the dosage is advisable. Experts recommend consuming it a few hours before bedtime to reduce the risk of acid reflux.
Individuals considering this addition to their health regimen should consult with a healthcare provider, especially if they have existing health concerns or are taking medications. It is important to note that consuming acidic substances can lead to digestive discomfort and may erode tooth enamel. Therefore, rinsing the mouth with water after consumption is recommended to protect dental health.
As interest in apple cider vinegar continues to grow, so does the need for informed discussions regarding its use and effects. For anyone looking to explore the potential benefits of this simple drink, seeking professional medical advice is a prudent first step.
