Kilkenny’s Deputy Calls for Improved Age-Friendly Parking
Kilkenny’s Deputy Peter ‘Chap’ Cleere has expressed the urgent need for enhanced parking facilities that cater to the aging population. In a statement made on November 5, 2025, Cleere emphasized that the current parking options are inadequate for older residents and visitors, advocating for a more inclusive approach to urban planning.
Deputy Cleere highlighted that many older individuals face challenges when accessing essential services and amenities due to insufficient parking options. He pointed out that age-friendly parking can significantly improve mobility and independence for seniors, allowing them to engage more actively in their communities.
Challenges Faced by Older Residents
The Kilkenny County Council has been encouraged to consider the specific needs of the elderly in its planning and development initiatives. Cleere noted that many older adults prefer to drive themselves but often struggle to find suitable parking spaces. He believes that creating designated spots with easy access to public areas will enhance their quality of life.
In addition to improving accessibility, Cleere stressed the importance of safety in parking design. He called for well-lit areas and clear signage to help older individuals navigate parking facilities more effectively. This initiative aims not only to enhance convenience but also to foster a sense of security among older residents.
Community Support and Future Plans
Local community members have voiced their support for Cleere’s proposal, acknowledging the need for changes that benefit the aging population. Many residents have shared personal experiences that illustrate the challenges faced when seeking parking options.
Cleere plans to present these concerns to the Kilkenny County Council in upcoming meetings, urging them to prioritize age-friendly parking solutions in their agenda. With a growing elderly population in Kilkenny, addressing these issues is increasingly critical.
As discussions continue, the focus remains on creating a more inclusive environment that meets the diverse needs of all residents. Enhancing parking facilities is just one step toward ensuring that Kilkenny remains a welcoming and accessible city for everyone, regardless of age.
